The scene you mention as “homophobic” references a very real phenomenon of white people sexually preying on Asian people. This particular portrayal shows how Asian men are not safe from creepy white men, the way Asian women are not safe from creepy white men. Gender does not seem to matter. Asian women are not safe from white women treating us like pets or dolls and getting violent when we don’t fit their submissive stereotypes, even if those white women claim to be straight. Gay Asian men in particular are preyed on by old white gay men, and it doesn’t take much to find their horrific stories. I’m grateful to the series for shedding light on this horrible phenomenon so apparent here in America as well as in the entitled, dehumanizing, and racist sexpat culture in Asian countries.
